The San Jose Sharks scored a franchise-record six first-period goals against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. Learn more about this game and last night's eight other NHL matchups in the Jan. 23 edition of NHL Minute.
Tuesday's Results
  • Winnipeg Jets 4, Washington Capitals 2 - Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec stopped 32 of Washington's 34 shots and Winnipeg converted two power play opportunities to down the Caps.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning 4, Carolina Hurricanes 1 - The Lightning built a 2-0 lead in the first to beat Carolina. Rookie center Cory Canacher, a 5-8, 179 lb. Canadian, has five points (2 goals, 3 assists) through his first three games.
  • Florida Panthers 1, Montreal Canadiens 4 - Veteran Montreal defenseman Andrei Markov notched two power play goals, goalie Carey Price stopped 28 of 29 shots, and 18-year-old Wisconsin native Alex Galchenyuk scored the first goal of his NHL career as the Canadiens picked up their first victory of the season. Galchenyuk was the third overall pick in this summer's draft and you can follow him on Twitter @Agally94.
  • Philadelphia Flyers 0, New Jersey Devils 3 - Future first-ballot Hall of Fame goaltender Martin Brodeur earned his 120th career shutout, giving the Devils a 3-0 victory at home in front of a sellout crowd. New Jersey stars Ilya Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac both scored, combining for three points and seven shots. Both players will need to produce in the absence of Zach Parise, who signed with Minnesota this offseason.
  • Dallas Stars 2, Detroit Red Wings 1 - Stars veteran right winger Michael Ryder, a great shooter, beat Wings goalie Jimmy Howard twice as Dallas moved to 2-1 on the year. The Stars shut down the Red Wings offense, essentially shutting them out until rookie center Damien Brunner put one on the board for Detroit with four seconds remaining.
  • Nashville Predators 3, Minnesota Wild 1 - Former Shark Dany Heatley scored his third goal in as many games, but it wasn't enough as Nashville broke a 1-1 tie midway through the third period thanks to a Martin Erat (2) backhander during a 4-on-4 situation. Predators center David Legwand, the franchise's first-ever draft pick back in 1998 (2nd overall behind Tampa Bay's Vincent Lecavalier), scored an empty-netter in the final minute to seal the deal.
  • St. Louis Blues 2, Chicago Blackhawks 3 - After Chicago built a 3-0 lead into the third period, St. Louis received goals from Andy McDonald (2) and T.J. Oshie (2; PPG) to make for a pressure-filled final five minutes. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford turned aside 32 shots, including 14 in just the third period alone, to move Chicago to 3-0 on the young season.
  • Los Angeles Kings 1, Colorado Avalanche 3 - The Kings lost a regular-season game when leading after two periods for the first time since April 2, 2009, as Colorado scored three third-period goals to pick up their first win of the season. 20-year-old Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog got Colorado's scoring started one minute into the third, and a power play goal by upcoming right winder David Jones gave them the lead for good. The defending Stanley Cup champion Kings drop to 0-2 on the year and will look to pick up their first win Thursday night at Edmonton.
  • San Jose Sharks 6, Edmonton Oilers 3  - The Sharks set a franchise record by scoring six goals in the first period on Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk, cruising the rest of the way to a 6-3 victory. San  Jose center Patrick Marleau scored his third and fourth goals of the season in a span of 65 seconds, blowing things open to a 4-1 lead just 11 minutes into the game. Edmonton outshot the Sharks 17-9 in the second period but could only score once on goalie Antti Niemi during the frame, as rookie defenseman Justin Schultz scored his first career NHL goal.
