Trailing by 16 points midway through the second half with a Mountain West Conference title on the line, San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher switched to a 1-3-1 defensive scheme that keyed a 51-48 championship victory over No. 21 New Mexico.
No. 10 SDSU went on a 19-1 run after making the switch, taking a 44-42 lead with roughly five minutes remaining. MWC MVP candidate Xavier Thames played a large part in the run, finishing with 23 points on 8-16 shooting. Thames put the finishing touches on the victory by knocking down two free throws in the closing seconds, queuing a court-storming celebration by The Show, SDSU's critically-acclaimed student section.
